A gift from the Class of 1986, this sculpture serves as a kind of ‘time capsule’ holding the Class of 1986’s collective memories of Macalester. It is oriented according to the four cardinal directions as inspired by Meso-American & North American Native drawings. It relates not only to Macalester’s international perspective, but also honors the college’s place on ‘Turtle Island’ (North America) and the creation myths of many cultures. Potratz is a 1964 Macalester alumnus with a MA from the University of California, Berkley. His specialties: ancient metal casting techniques, sculpture, metal casting of bronze, iron & aluminum. North: the turtle & water; East: air & the eagle; South: the tree & earth; West: fire & human culture. The lid is in the form of a sea turtle with a map of world on its back.
