Kids lean against a pirogue, a traditional wooden outrigger canoe used for fishing. The older boys and men fish everyday from before dawn until midday or later depending on the ocean conditions. Women and young children do other work on shore, including cleaning fish to sell. Fishing is the only livelihood for these villagers and has been for generations. Remembering something I had read, I asked an older man if he believes in mermaids. Sure, there are mermaids, but they don t live here, he replied.
