The Honor Guard performs a special changing of the guard outside Greece's Parliament building. Tourists and proud Greek citizens with their grandchildren crowd the area in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. When asked about the significance of the soldiers' uniform, a Greek woman told me, ""We were under the Ottoman Empire's reign for 400 years. There are 400 triangular pieces of cloth on each skirt. We were not going to add another one."" When asked about the pom-poms, she responded, ""Those are purely decorative.""
