During his almost 10 year presidency Carlos Menem ended up privatizing almost all of the nation's industries and ripped out the extensive railway system that connected the entire country. The train tracks and cars now sit empty in a sort of waste land, rusting away. The ghost trains serve as a reminder of what the country was before its devastating economic crash in 2001, right after Menem's presidency ended, and the struggle that the country still faces to get back on its feet economically.
